Beauty: January Empties & Favourites

Since I started including beauty as a regular category on A View from the Balcony, monthly favourites and empties posts are something I've been keen to get stuck into. But with being away from October to December and not really wearing makeup or using products, January has been the first full month during which I've emptied anything and frequently tried out a lot of new products.

Of course, Christmas helped to restock my skincare and makeup collection, and meant that I had some lovely new items to try. Although after two months away, I felt like a child trying on their mum's lipstick and pretty much had to reteach myself every trick I've ever learnt. You can thank YouTube for my newly perfected winged eyeliner skills...

I originally planned to tell you all of this in a YouTube video, but with starting full-time work and having mega busy weekends, I couldn't find the time (during daylight) to sit down in front of my camera and waffle on until I had enough footage to create something coherent. Maybe next month?!

January Empties

Benefit Hello Flawless Foundation

The first thing I finished this month was this little foundation from Benefit, which I've mentioned on the blog before. I love the consistency and finish of this foundation and I was sad to see the last of it go. One thing I didn't notice at the time of writing my initial review was that the tube inside the outside packaging retracts towards the lid the more you use, so you always know how much product you've got left. So much better than conventional foundation packaging where the edges of the bottle are smeared in leftover product that you will never be able to use!

Although I haven't repurchased this foundation yet (because it's a little too pricey for me right now), I would definitely consider buying it in the future.

Rimmel Wake Me Up Concealer

This concealer was an instant repurchase for me. It's everything I look for in a concealer, being the perfect colour, and thick enough to cover up bad skin but not so dense it feels like you're painting your face. Plus, it's affordable. I know I'll be sticking by this trusty concealer for a long time.

Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream

I got this moisturiser as part of a Benefit advent calendar, and although it's a tiny pot it lasted surprisingly well. Even though I really liked the moisturiser, I haven't repurchased it because it's not quite enough to break the bond between me and my current moisturiser (see below).

L'Oreal Infallible Mattifying Primer

I reviewed this primer back in September and it's only just run out, so that's already a winning factor. Having spent the majority of my makeup-wearing life oblivious to its existence, I now can't imagine my makeup routine without this initial step. I haven't repurchased it yet because I have a sample from another brand, but it is sure to be a strong contender.

The Body Shop Vitamin C Moisturiser

As I mentioned in my 2015 Favourites post, I have already repurchased this moisturiser multiple times and oh my goodness do I love it. Not only does it do amazing things for my skin, but I adore the smell and it genuinely makes me feel more awake in the mornings. I can't see anything else knocking this one off top spot any time soon.

January Favourites

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil

This product was a completely new addition in January but it has revolutionised my skincare routine. It's not an every day use, but it makes such a difference when I do.

Benefit Rockateur Blusher

This was another product that I got in the Benefit advent calendar and it's completely replaced the cream blusher I was using before. The shade is perfect for my complexion and I love how nicely it applies onto the skin. I was never much of a blusher kinda gal, but I've been completely converted now.

The Balm Bahama Mama Bronzer

I had heard so many amazing things about this bronzer, so it was one of the first things I added to my Christmas list, and I am very glad I did. It's my first ever product from The Balm and I'm now super keen to try more of their makeup. Again, it's just a perfect colour, which is often hard to find in a bronzer. Plus, I adore the packaging.

Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter

Yep, you guessed it, this one was from the Benefit advent calendar too. I had only tried powder highlighters before this one, but I am now a big cream highlighter fan. Even though it is slightly more difficult to apply and control as you have to blend it out, the end result is so worth it.

MAC Velvet Teddy & Charlotte Tilbury Glastonberry

I had two favourite lip products in January, one for every day use and one for those bold statement lip moments. Velvet Teddy has already claimed the title of my all-time favourite nude lip, and I now understand why I've been hearing so much about it.

I love deep berry and plum lips, especially on nights out, and Charlotte Tilbury's Glastonberry makes me feel like a vampire queen. Although it is a very similar colour to Topshop's Inhibition if you're looking for a slightly more budget version. Of course, the consistency doesn't compare though...

What have been your favourites over the last month? Is there anything I should try out in February?
